2017 Srebrenica Remembrance Day & Bosnia and Herzegovina Tribute Week

WHEREAS, beginning in April 1992, many Bosniaks sought protection from aggression and ethnic cleansing perpetrated by Bosnian Serb forces; and

WHEREAS, from 1992 to 1995, Bosnia experienced the largest massacre in Europe since the Holocaust; and

WHEREAS, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed by Bosnian Serb forces, and the International Court of Justice declared the atrocity at Srebrenica in 1995 an act of genocide; and

WHEREAS, the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives have passed resolutions observing the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, and expressing support for reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina;

WHEREAS, the Congress of North American Bosniaks (CNAB) is an umbrella organization that represents Bosniaks in the United States and Canada and promotes civil, cultural, and educational programs designed to further the knowledge of Bosnian history; and

WHEREAS, CNAB exists to raise awareness of Bosnian people who died as a result of policies established for ethnic cleansing and aggression, but also commemorate achievements of Bosnians across the United States, as well as foster relationships through cities, counties, and states; and

WHEREAS, support and recognition of this event is important to bring closure to the Bosnian people, and to articulate representation of Bosnians in North America;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize July 11, 2017, as SREBRENICA REMEMBRANCE DAY, and July 11-17, 2017, as BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA TRIBUTE WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
