National Girl Scout Week

WHEREAS, March 12, 2017, marks the 105th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A, founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouting has instilled millions of girls and women with the courage, confidence, and character they need to make the world a better place; and

WHEREAS, through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls develop skills and learn lessons that will serve them throughout their lives, so that they can continue to contribute to their communities; and

WHEREAS, Girl Scouting takes an active role in increasing girls’ awareness of opportunities in math, science, sports, and technology, and encourages them to explore these and many other fields of interest that can expand their horizons;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize March 12-18, 2017, as national girl scout week in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
